Dreams do come true. Chris Ingram, Atlanta native and eldest son of longtime Braves radio play by play man Ben Ingram, was selected by the Braves with the 31st overall selection in this year's Amateur Draft. The Vanderbilt University shortstop was the third of his position selected in the first round, behind Minnesota's Josh Maloy (Chicago White Sox) and LSU's Josh Huett (Oakland).
Ingram is a redshirt junior at Vanderbilt, where he has eclipsed 200+ career hits and runs, closing in on home run number 40, and has over 70 stolen bases during his Commodore career. Before his time in Tennessee, Ingram was an established Atlanta area prep player, playing his high school ball at Wesleyan, the same halls that Major Leaguer Druw Jones walked. Nicknamed 'Wild Man', Ingram's play on the baseball field goes hand in hand with the nickname.
For both Ingram's it's a dream come true. For Chris, he returns home to Georgia to fast track towards the club in Atlanta. For Ben, he gets to cling on to the hope of calling Chris' debut for the hometown Braves inside Truist Park.
"Indescribable", said Ben Ingram in a short text when asked how to describe the feeling. "So thankful to this organization for believing in Chris. An absolute dream come true."
Chris played shortstop at Vanderbilt but the Braves announced him as a third basemen after selecting him. Soon to be 22 years of age, he should start at low A Rome and advance through the system quickly. Scouting director Billy Gasparino described Ingram as "a plus contact bat, serious raw power, large frame with room to continue growing, and an uncanny ability to put the bat on the ball". Ingram has struck out only 47 times across 783 career plate appearances at Vanderbilt.
